*How can what is considered to be one of the most offensive words in the English language also be a synonym for female genitalia?

Chastity Belt (Thong Book)

Folded paper with alternating synonyms for prudes and sluts written inside, creating a flower like shape. With chain thong, for the modern woman who hates panty lines and likes a little bling. Warning: Not actual chastity belt!!

Artist Statement

My artwork brings feminist and queer issues to the forefront to inform and advocate for equality. These issues are explored through domestic work, such as sewing and embroidery, as well as printmaking and sculpture. My work tries to free individuals of stereotypes, through reclaiming derogatory words and putting images of the vulva in the public sphere. My work is fun, humorous, and inviting, causing people to step in closer, only to discover the subversive issues I am presenting.

There is also a discussion of sexual assault and rape within my work because it is an all too common occurrence that people need to face. It is something people do not want to discuss or think about, but ignoring it will not do anything to protect the six hundred American women a day who are assaulted. With my artwork, I seek to provoke dialogue about these issues.

Artist Bio

Ariel Capellupo is a MFA student at SCAD and she received her BFA Degree from The College of New Jersey in 2011. She graduated a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society and Kappa Pi International Art Fraternity. Her works have been exhibited in a number of different settings, including an exhibition and silent auction entitled Revulvalution, where her works raised money for charity. Her painting “5 Cunts” was the only piece of art displayed at TCNJ’s 2010 presentation of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues, and her pillow series “What is Normal?” received the Provost Purchase Award at the 2011 Student Exhibition.
